Important Vedas

The Vedas are considered to be one of the most sacred scriptures of the Hindu religion. They are claimed to be among the world's oldest scriptures. Veda is said to be the treasure vault to wisdom and knowledge.

Historians divide the Vedic corpus into two parts : Early and Later Vedic texts.

  • Early Vedic literature refers to the family books of the Rig Veda Samhita. Later Vedic literature includes Books 1, 8, 9, and 10 of the Rig Veda Samhita, the Samhitas of the Sama, Yajur, and Atharva Vedas, and the Brahmanas, Aranyakas, and Upanishads attached to all the four Vedas.
  • Among these later texts, the Mantra portions are the earliest, followed by the Brahmanas, Aranyakas, and Upanishads.
  • In order to understand the Vedas, it is necessary to learn the Vedangas or the limbs of the Vedas. These supplements of the Vedas provide education (siksha), grammar (vyakarana), ritual (kalpa), etymology (nirukta), metrics (chhanda) and astronomy (Jyotisha).
  • Each of the four Vedas is arranged into four chronological parts of which the Samhitas are the first. The other three are: The Brahmanas - guides to rituals and prayers for priests, The Aranyakas - principles of worship and meditation, The Upanishads - teachings of the mystical and philosophical elements of Hinduism.
  • Some scholars categorize the Samhitas and the Brahmanas together as the Karma-Kanda part of the Vedas because they contain information relevant to rituals and ceremonies.
